How to scent a room without overwhelming it

A well-scented room should still feel like a room. These five adjustments help fragrance sit within the space instead of taking it over.

1. Begin low

Start with a lower setting or smaller quantity than the maximum. Increase only after the scent has had time to distribute evenly.

2. Position with intention

Place the diffuser where air can move around it, away from direct sun, strong draughts and delicate surfaces. Avoid positioning a concentrated source immediately beside where someone sits or sleeps.

3. Work with the room

Soft furnishings hold scent, while hard, open spaces can let it disperse quickly. Adjust the intensity to the actual room rather than copying a setting from somewhere else.

4. Avoid competing layers

Scented candles, cleaning products, fabric sprays and diffusers can create noise when used together. Choose one clear direction and let supporting products stay quiet.

5. Reset the space

Switch the device off when the room has reached the desired level, and ventilate regularly. A break protects against olfactory fatigue and makes the next use feel distinct.

Restraint is not the absence of fragrance. It is what gives fragrance shape.
